Images and Copyright

When using images, make sure you do not violate copyright law. Using images without proper permission and attribution can lead to fines and lawsuits.

Avoid Copyright Problems:

Limit image searches by License or Usage Rights.
Get images from sites that offer Public Domain or Creative Commons images.
Give proper attribution for the source of the image.
If required, ask for permission from the copyright holder.
Ask a librarian if you aren't sure.

Search Tip:

Many search sites, such as Google or Bing, offer a filter or limit option to help you find images that are safe to use. Look for a limit labeled "Usage Rights" or "License."

Creative Commons Search
Database of digital media works available for others to build upon legally and to share.
Google Image Advanced Search
Filter Google Images in Advanced search for results that have usage rights.
Getty Open Content Search
The Getty makes available, without charge, all available digital images to which the Getty holds the rights or that are in the public domain to be used for any purpose. No permission is required.
Wikimedia Commons
Material that is posted to Wikimedia commons by users. Most of the items are free. Information is posted below each item about how it can be used.
Unsplash
High-resolution photos that are free to use.
Pixabay
Royalty free stock photos and copyright free vector graphics. You can use any Pixabay image without attribution in digital and printed form, even for commercial applications.
