Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual reality (VR) is a realistic and immersive simulation of a virtual environment, experienced through interactive software and hardware.

VR Room

Online reservations must be made at least 8 hours in advance.

IMPORTANT:

  • Wait until you get a confirmation email from a staff member BEFORE you come to use the VR room.
  • We will let you know if we can fit you in the schedule.

Your First Visit

If it is your first time in the VR room, a Library staff member will give you an orientation. They will provide you with a hands-on tutorial of how to connect the VR headset, put it on, and get started with a VR tutorial. If you have not already done so, complete the safety tutorial.

Policies and Procedures

PCC Library has two Meta Quest 2 headsets available for faculty and currently enrolled students.  All VR equipment is in-library use only, with a two-hour loan period.

Reservations & Checkout

The VR headsets are to be used in the designated VR Lab in room 214 of the Library (Everett Building). The Meta Quest 2 VR headset is an untethered experience and does not require a PC or sensors. The VR Lab includes a large screen TV and a laptop for casting purposes.

Borrowing Policies

  • A valid PCC ID and a current PCC Library account is required to borrow the Meta Quest 2 headset and accessories.
  • Virtual reality equipment may be borrowed for a two-hour loan period for in-library use only.
  • All VR headsets are to be used in the designated VR Lab (room 214) of the Library.
  • Users are responsible for the safe use, condition, and full return of borrowed equipment. Equipment that is not returned, stolen, or damaged will be subject to item replacement fees.

User Agreement

As part of the VR room reservation process, you will be required to check a box indicating whether or not you have read the following terms and conditions as part of our user agreement.

 

The Library's VR Room, the Meta Quest 2 VR headset(s), and other VR equipment are intended to support academic work and technology enrichment for Pitt CC students, faculty, and staff. By clicking "YES, I have read and understand the PCC VR User Agreement" on the VR Room reservation form, you are indicating that you agree to the following terms and assume responsibility for the VR equipment and the room in which it is stored: 

  • The VR room and equipment can only be reserved by current Pitt CC students, staff, and faculty.
  • Complete the SAFETY TUTORIAL [opens a new window] before your first time using the lab.
  • You may reserve the VR Room and its equipment for up to 2 hours for an individual session (no more than 2 students at a time).  
  • Submitting a reservation request DOES NOT guarantee a reservation. A librarian will contact you with a confirmed reservation.
  • Back-to-back and/or multiple reservations may be canceled by library staff if the room and equipment are in high demand. 
  • If a reservation holder fails to appear after 15 minutes, the reservation can be canceled by library staff. 
  • You can submit a reservation request for the VR Room up to 2 weeks in advance.  
  • Past VR Room reservation information is kept for statistical purposes and can be disclosed to law enforcement upon request. 
  • VR equipment will be sanitized, and its data cleared after each use. Users are NOT permitted to sanitize the equipment or clear its data for any reason. 
  • Apps are pre-loaded on the VR equipment for users. Users are NOT permitted to purchase apps at any time (including downloading free apps). 
  • Do NOT log out of the PCC account(s) on any of the VR equipment. Doing so may ban users from future use of the room and its equipment. 
  • Users of virtual reality headsets may experience dizziness or unsettling feelings at any point during use. You are using the VR equipment at your own risk. New users to VR are advised to sit in a chair until they are comfortable with the device.
