PICO(T) Questions

Creating a Search

Now, it's time to put it all together to search in the databases. Use Boolean Operators to connect your keywords. Boolean Operators such as AND, OR, and NOT allow you to combine or exclude search terms which controls the scope and relevance of search results. AND narrows a search by requiring all terms to be present; OR broadens a search by including records with any of the terms; and, NOT narrows a search by excluding specific terms from the results.

Patient/Problem   Intervention   Outcome
(geriatrics OR "senior citizens" OR aged) AND (mammography OR mammogram OR screening) AND ("early detection" OR diagnosis)

Now, enter the different portions of your PICOT question into the database using the Advanced search.

If you were to type out the entire search as one long search phrase, it would look like:

(geriatrics OR "senior citizens" OR aged) AND (mammography OR mammogram OR screening) AND ("early detection" OR diagnosis)
