High-risk behaviors and negative lifestyle choices. Short- and long-term health effects.

  • Depression:
    • Detail habits and behaviors that increase the risk of or exacerbate depression that are more commonly seen in the U.S. college student population.
    • Identify the physiological health effects of poorly managed depression.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify habits and behaviors that increase the risk of or exacerbate suicidal ideation that are more commonly seen in the U.S. college student population.

Global Components

  • Depression:
    • Identify and compare the U.S. rates of depression to the rates of your team’s assigned country. Include estimated rates of those diagnosed, undiagnosed, and maintaining treatment.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify and compare the U.S. rates of suicide to the rates of your team’s assigned country. Include estimated rates of individuals using emergency community resources (e.g. suicide hotlines) and estimated rates of attempts and completions.

Symptoms and/or behavioral indicators that someone may be on the negative end of the wellness spectrum. Screenings and/or diagnoses for a person who may be on the negative end of the wellness spectrum are included.

  • Depression:
    • Identify the behaviors of a person who is exhibiting depression. This is not the same as health effects.
    • List the resources/methods that mental health professionals would use to identify and treat depression.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify the behaviors/habits of a person with depression that could be linked to suicidal ideation.
    • List red flag behaviors of someone who may be struggling with suicidal ideation.

  • Depression:
    • Identify and briefly discuss the similarities and differences between how the United States approaches mental health care compared to your team’s assigned country.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify and briefly discuss the similarities and differences between how the United States approaches suicide prevention and intervention compared to your team’s assigned country.

Positive lifestyle choices for prevention, and how to seek treatment when needed.

  • Depression:
    • Identify how U.S. college students can decrease their risk or better manage depression.
    • Identify different treatment options used by mental health professionals after diagnosis.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify how U.S. college students can decrease their risk of suicidal ideation.
    • List the resources for immediate intervention(s) for someone seriously contemplating suicide.

  • Depression:
    • Identify and briefly discuss changes that could be made in the U.S. to improve the approach to mental health care that you learned from your team’s assigned country.
  • Suicide:
    • Identify and briefly discuss changes that could be made in the U.S. to improve suicide interventions and prevention that you learned from your team’s assigned country.
