. . . and why is it important?
Your Student Educational Plan (SEP) is an online plan you create through the PCC Portal. Your SEP helps you plan what classes you will take each semester. It is a clear road map of what classes you need to complete, and in what order you should complete them in, to satisfy graduation requirements for your program. Successful students dedicate time to creating their SEP and consulting their advisors regarding their SEP.
Every student at PCC is required to complete an SEP each semester before they can register for classes. In addition, SEPs must be approved by a student's academic advisor before they are able to register for classes. Students are only able to register for classes that are on their SEP AND that have been approved by their advisor.
Remember that academic planning is the responsibility of the student. While PCC advisors are assigned to assist and guide you, creating your SEP and registering for classes is your responsibility. This allows you to take control of your education. Learning to academically plan and use your SEP can help empower you to make choices about the classes you take instead of having someone else decide for you. In addition, being an active participant in creating your SEP can open meaningful academic planning dialogue between you and your advisor that will help you understand why you are taking the courses you are taking, ensure that you are taking classes that will meet program requirements, allow your voice to be heard, and help you practice academic planning.
When creating your SEP, consult your PCC program curriculum sheet (degree plan) to determine what classes you need to register for. Using your PCC degree plan to develop your SEP will help you stay on track and ensure that you meet graduation requirements for your program.
A plan of study is a list of the general education and major/program courses required for you to earn a specific credential. Every major/program at an institution has a plan of study for the educational options offered within the major/program. Please note that some programs have only one educational option while other programs may have multiple educational options. Each educational option has a different set of course requirements and each are outlined in its specific plan of study.
You may notice the phrase plan of study is not consistent from institution to institution or even department to department. When referring to a plan of study, some schools or departments use different terminology. Below is a list of terms frequently used by institutions to refer to a plan of study.
Follow the instructions below:
Access the PCC website (https://pittcc.edu).
Click Academics then select Academic Programs.
Scroll down the page until you locate your academic program. Click on your program.
Look for your program’s plan of study. (Remember it can be called any of the terms listed above.) In most cases, you will look under Program Menu and click a link that mentions course schedules, course plans, curriculum sheets, etc.
Example: Under Program Menu on the Automotive Systems Technology homepage, there is a link for Automotive Systems Technology Course Schedules and Descriptions.
On the next page, look for links that mention curriculum sheet, course schedule, curriculum checklist, etc.
These links will typically open as PDF documents that you can save to your computer, print, etc.
Associate in General Education (AGE) students, students who will be applying to a PCC Health Science program, should use the degree plan of the intended health science program to ensure they are completing prerequisite requirements for their program. DO NOT use the AGE degree plan.
